The other day my Mother hosted a Christmas luncheon. Such events are so exciting during this time of year as it gives us reasons to dress up, be festive, and enjoy the company of great friends. The fine china (Schumann Heirloom, a vintage pattern) was used, along with a mixture of different sterling silver flatware patterns. I chose to wear a brocade skirt. I was debating on wearing purple at first, but after putting the outfit together, I love the festive look it gave.
The dessert shown in the last photo (bottom right hand corner), is an old French dessert from the 1700s called Tortoni. It was given to my Mother by one of her friends, and it is unaccessible on the internet and such since it dated. Delicious is an understatement for this dish! When seeing it contains apricot preserves, you might be a bit hesitant to make it, but it really adds the perfect flavor and makes the dessert so pretty. The recipe is listed below. It is so simple to make and is the ideal holiday treat!
Tortoni
1/3 cup of toasted almonds
3 T. of melted butter
1 cup os crushed vanilla wafers
1 tsp. of almond flavoring
1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream
12 oz. of apricot preserves
1/2 (8-oz.) of cool whip
Combine almonds, butter, vanilla wafers, and almond flavoring. Mix well and set aside exactly one half of this mixture. Use the remaining half to line an 8×8 pan. Use 1/2 of the ice cream for the next layer. Spread half of the apricot preserves on top of the ice cream. Use 1/2 of remaining topping on top of the preserves. Then, repeat the layers. Top with cool whip and freeze.
I hope you get a chance to make this dessert! You won’t regret it. I hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas season.
