Halloween 2018: A Little Miss Muffet Halloween

Hello friends and Happy November! I absolutely can’t believe October is over and we are now into November. It’s another one of my favorite months for sure 🙂 I know Halloween is over and we are already into November, but I just had to share more of our Halloween costumes on here with y’all. I always like to keep it a surprise when sharing our costumes on my Instagram on Halloween night. So I’m keeping it a tradition to share them on my blog the next day. It was such an amazing Halloween. Madeline had so much fun, and I would for sure say it was the best one yet.
As y’all can see, our theme for this year was Little Miss Muffet. It all started when I found this amazing tarantula costume for Jaycee. It’s SO cute! Some said it scared them half to death haha, but I think it’s just hilarious. The best part is when she walks, especially when she walks really fast. The legs move so quickly that it actually looks like a giant spider walking across the floor haha.
So once I found this costume for Jaycee, I started thinking of ideas for our theme because I just had to get this spider costume. That’s when Little Miss Muffet came to mind. And this these honestly could not be any more fitting. I then found this absolutely adorable Little Miss Muffet costume for Madeline. I ran the idea by her, and she loved it. Madeline has always loved Little Miss Muffet and can say it by heart. The spider costume got her laughing as well. Then I figured I could be the spider web and get creative with making a fun spider web skirt (I’ll share more details on that below).
So here’s why this theme is so fitting. Anyone who has a small breed dog knows what it’s like when they “try” and show their superiority haha. Jaycee will act so tough for the funniest reasons. She’ll bark and growl at just about every pup she comes across. She loves to “scare” away our Mailman and the UPS carrier. She’s just nine pounds of pure, ferocious fluff lol. She also loves to show her superiority to Madeline. It’s kind of a “I was here first, just so you know” type attitude haha. Madeline loves to act all dramatic with Jaycee. When she barks and growls, Madeline loves to act scared screaming and running away. So, “along came a (puppy) spider who sat down (and growled) beside and frightened Miss Muffet away” was just so fitting 🙂
I also wanted to talk a little on how I made my skirt. So, I used the same tying tulle method that I’ve used in the past to make table skirts for Madeline’s birthday parties and my costume last year (see a tutorial here). This year I used both black and glittery black tulle. I believe I used about four rolls of the solid black tulle and three of the glitter, alternating the strands (three black then one glitter). For the band, I used this ribbon. It works perfectly for tying the tulle through the holes in two layers. I would tie one on the bottom, then one to the top, then one to the bottom, etc. in a zig-zag type method. Here’s a tip for the band: when measuring it out for your waist, make sure that you measure it an inch or two smaller. The weight of the tulle will stretch out the band and you won’t be able to keep it up.
After the skirt was finished, I tried it on to make sure it was the length I wanted it to be. I also trimmed the edges to make sure the tulle was all even. Next, I unraveled a package of this decorative stretchy spiderweb and made sure it was all smoothed out, making it look as natural as possible. I basically just unrolled it on the floor. Then I laid the skirt in the spider web and loosely wrapped the skirt in it. After that, I trimmed off the excess. Next I spent quite some time making sure the web was all evenly dispersed around the skirt. I didn’t want it to look clumpy in any areas and smoothed it out/trimmed it where needed. Then, I used a hot glue gun to glue the glittery spiders around the front of the skirt (mine came from Hobby Lobby). And lastly, I lightly tacked the spider web to the waistband of the skirt (the tied portions of the tulle strands) to make sure the web was securely tacked. I was so surprised to see that my skirt made it through traveling, a costume contest, photos, and Halloween. These skirts are so much fun to make! You can get so creative and basically make a skirt to go with any theme.
